BLACKBERRY AND THE FAILURE OF JOURNALISM

What is amazing about all the coverage of Blackberry’s implosion of late is how little spade work business journalists did when its difficulties became obvious.  They could have identified Blackberry’s problems a decade ago and for some inexcusable reason only one did.  Almost 100% of them watched, silent, as Blackberry stock cruised from just over $2 in 2003 when Blackberry’s problems became frighteningly apparent, till it hit an unsustainable $144 in June 2008.  Suddenly now, with the stock in the tank, the company put up for a desperation sale, and investors out 93% since the peak half a decade ago, …

SIEMENS IN THE DEAD ZONE

Siemens has a new CEO, Joe Kaeser, the former CFO.  He can make a difference, but does he know how?  The hard facts are these:

Siemens sales operations collapsed over a decade and half ago and show no signs of life.
Its manufacturing operations, which I sharply criticized in the late 1980s, have gotten steadily worse in the last fifteen years.
And it is being forced to bank its suppliers, pushing its focus away from the markets it is meant to be serving.
Siemens gets our Management Grade F.
